St. Paul's Cathedral is one of the world's most famous cathedrals. It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1708 to replace the previous cathedral destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The huge and elegant dome dominates the skyline of the City and gives stunning views over London.
This classical cathedral represents inspiration and craftsmanship on a grand scale and the enormous lead-covered dome is second in size only to St. Peter's in Rome. St. Paul's contains many fabulous carvings, statues and mosaics. The Whispering Gallery is named after its acoustic properties - words whispered on one side of the wall are distinctly audible over 60 metres away on the other, although it is usually too busy to fully appreciate this. It is possible to climb to the very top, inside the dome, to see magnificent panoramic views of the city. On Sundays it is only open for services.
Open: Monday to Saturday, visiting times may vary due to services and special events. Sunday for worship only
Admission: charge
Nearest tube station: St. Paul's
